Tharjana 2008 Biodiversity Exhibition

This is an Educational Exhibition towards Protection of Threatened Flora and Fauna of Sri Lanka

This is Jointly organized by Young Biologists’ Association of Sri Lanka and National Museum of Natural History, Sri Lanka. This wlll be held from 3-5 April 2008 10.20 am to 3.30 pm at National Museum of Natural History, Colombo 7, Sri Lanka.

Introduction

Wild life conservation has been a hot topic over the last decade throughout the World. One of the main objectives of conservation should be to minimize the rate of extinction. In order to achieve this goal, identifying the threatened species and their level of risk to survival is necessary. In the aim of serving the above requirement Young Biologists’ Association presenting the Exhibition “Thrjana 2008” in the theme of threatened wild life in Sri Lanka. Posters, Paintings, Photographs and specimens will be exhibited.

Objectives

• To make people aware about the endangered flora and fauna of Sri Lanka
• Enable students to study more about the threatened species, which will ultimately help to conserve those species

• Sri Lanka’s Biological Zones
• Threatened Flora - Ferns, Wild Orchids, Family Dipterocarpaceae
• Threatened Molluscs - Land Snails , Marine snails
• Threatened Insects - Rainbow wings; Butterflies, Winged dragons; Dragonflies, Damselflies
• Threatened Spiders - Hairy hunters; Tarantulas, Jump…. jump..; Jumping spiders, Web weavers; Orb web spiders
• Threatened Freshwater fish - Only in Sri Lanka; Endemic fish
• Threatened Amphibians
• Threatened Reptiles - Horned lizards, Turtles, Crocodiles, Fatally venomous snakes, Live snake show
• Threatened Birds - Endemic birds of Sri Lanka, Winter Visitors: migrants, Water lovers: Waders, Globally threatened birds
• Threatened Mammals - Mammalian skulls, Sri Lankan pride: Elephants, Mongooses, Tin…Tin… friends: Squirrels, Wild relatives; Primates, Hunters in the Wild: Wild Cats
